Gatwick Airport (LGW) is an international airport located in West Sussex, just a stone’s throw away from the bustling city of London. Have you ever heard of Tenterden? It’s a charming town nestled in the picturesque English county of Kent. Tenterden is worth considering if you’re planning a visit from Gatwick Airport. Though traffic can be unpredictable, the 50-mile (80-kilometre) drive usually ranges from one hour and twenty minutes to one hour and forty-five minutes.
Tenterden is 57 miles east of Gatwick Airport, and a taxi there takes about 1 hour and 5 minutes via the M25 and A21 highways. This Kentish town is known as a Cinque Port and sits on the edge of the Weald, offering a commanding view of the River Rother Valley. It was a major port and shipbuilding hub before the big storms during the 15th century that obstructed the River Rother. Luckily, numerous timber-framed buildings, a medieval church, cobblestone streets, and the Georgian-era Town Hall have survived. It is believed that William Caxton, who printed the first book in English in 1477, was born in Tenterden. St. Mildred’s Church, with its lofty spire, has been standing since the 12th century and was once the site of a beacon that warned of the Spanish Armada’s approach. Horatia, the daughter of Lord Nelson, was once married to the vicar in Tenterden. Despite the massive expansion that has become typical elsewhere, Tenterden has managed to avoid it, making it still one of the most charming towns.
